A Brief History of Zeta Chapter

Zeta Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International has a colorful and impressive history.  Since it was the sixth chapter organized by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, it was given the name "Zeta."  On December 7, 1929, at a luncheon in the Hilton Hotel, Zeta Chapter was installed by Dr. Blanton, the National President and Founder of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society.  There were 32 active and 2 honorary members initiated on that day.  Membership grew to include members from all levels of education and both teachers and administrators.  Zeta has provided two state presidents and numerous other state officers, committee chairmen and members, and area coordinators.  Some Zeta members have represented Alpha State on International Committees. The chapter has long been a highly respected chapter in Texas.

Scholarship

Zeta Chapter has one scholarship, the Zeta Mary Clayton Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded each spring to a Zeta member desiring to further her education. Guidelines for submitting an application are available from the chairman of the Scholarship Committee.

Grants-in aid

Zeta Chapter has four grants-in-aid. Recipients for each grant-in-aid are selected from McLennan County high school female applicants who wish to complete education required for teaching. Guidelines for submitting an application for a grant-in-aid are sent each spring to area high school counselors in McLennan County .

Mary Strange Future Teacher Recruitment Award

Mary Strange was a charter member of Zeta Chapter and served as the chapter's first recording secretary. Miss Strange was an art teacher and later served as art and writing supervisor for the Waco schools. However, she was recognized by many for her work with the young women at Waco High School . For many years following her death, a longtime friend sent a check annually to Zeta in memory of Miss Strange. This amount was added to by Mrs. Jamie Hoover, sister of Miss Strange, and Zeta members to be awarded to a young woman--a graduating senior--from one of the high schools in McLennan County desiring to pursue a career in the field of education. The award is now supported through contributions by Zeta members.

Variel Starr Garner Future Teacher Recruitment Award

Variel Starr Garner taught homemaking at Moody High School for many years. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. She joined Zeta Chapter in 1972 and held many offices including Zeta president 1984-1986. Upon her death the family established the Variel Starr Garner Future Teacher Recruitment Award to be given to a female high school student in McLennan County who plans to become a part of the teaching profession. This award is granted every other year.

Lena Amsler Grant-in-aid

This grant-in-aid bears the name of the late Miss Lena Amsler of McGregor, Texas , the donor and a charter member of Zeta Chapter. It was established in 1973 and grew as a result of the gifts from Miss Amsler during her lifetime and the generous bequest to Zeta Chapter provided in her will in 1979. Zeta Chapter expresses tribute and deep gratitude to the late Miss Amsler who was a devoted teacher, a generous benefactress, and an honored member of Zeta Chapter. Recipients of this grant-in-aid shall be worthy women who have successfully completed their sophomore year of college in the field of education, and for women who wish to return to, or to enter, the teaching profession.

Christine Peters Barnett Grant-in-aid

ristine Peters Barnett was a long time principal of Mart Elementary School in Mart, Texas . She began her administrative position as principal in 1926. She was a highly respected educator of McLennan County . Mrs. Barnett, a charter member of Zeta Chapter, established this grant-in-aid by making a gift to Zeta Chapter on April 18, 1980. The intent and purpose of this gift was to offer financial aid to worthy college women who wish to complete their professional training in education and/or assist women in updating their certification to return to teaching or to pursue a higher degree in education.
