Therapy Dogs: Providing Heartfelt Peace in our Communities
Bridget Honan (Alpha Chapter, Past Alpha Rho State President, Music); Betty Flinn, Therapy Dogs, Inc.
Come meet some ambassadors of peace and learn how they provide peace in their communities for people who otherwise might not have access to an animal for companionship and affection. Presenters will give the background information on therapy dogs and explain what differentiates them from “service dogs”.  The teams will demonstrate the characteristics and skills required of therapy dogs.

Many free sites are available to help you “Teach Peace.” DKG connects with the United Nations, Massachusetts DKG has an ongoing peace project; Eugene’s Peace Park creators also developed curriculum; teachers can connect with state, national, and international projects.

Why become a National Board Certified Teacher? What’s in it for you? How can being a NBCT bring peace to your classroom? What can improve your chances of passing the first time? All these questions and more will be answered in this workshop, including how current NBCTs are working to gather state support and improve district benefits with the help of OEA

Enable your chapter members to keep informed quickly in this digital and mobile age. Publicize the mission and benefits of DKG to potential members and the community. Your chapter can have its own website built easily and free of charge using Weebly.com.  You will learn how to do it and how to fulfill the DKG International requirements for certification.

Peace Hopes for the Middle East

Lane Community College Students: Yaara Tal (Israeli) and Deema Yusef (Palestinian)
History in the Middle East is long and complicated. Is it even possible to hope for peace there? Yaara and Deema have been trained by Creativity for Peace in the deep listening and honest dialogue that make peace possible in our conflict-torn world. They are inspiring and remarkable young women who openly share their stories of journeying into peace in the midst of war and chaos.

Love and Logic:  Strategies for lasting, loving relationships for families & all school staff
Kate Kelleher (Beta Beta Chapter Co-President)
Kate Kelleher is a recently retired teacher and counselor who is a facilitator for the Love & Logic curriculum. She has seen first-hand, in her school and other schools, the effectiveness of the strategies in creating changes for both students and adults.  The curriculum works with parents, teachers, instructional assistants, administrators, bus drivers, secretaries, and all school support staff.

Literature and Peace:  Using Essential Questions to Discuss Ethical Dilemmas
Dr. Jill Slansky and Evelyn Banko (Phi Chapter)
Using Essential Questions can help students become actively involved in seeing how literary characters delve into questions such as: What is the relationship between decisions and consequences? How can a person’s decisions and actions change his/her life? Rich discussions based on Essential Questions result in students who think critically and perceive how decisions lead to consequences that can create peaceful conclusions.
