Speakers

Lura

A BUTTERFLY PEACE QUILT AND A TEACHER'S PROMISE

Named a Nobel Laureate Peace Educator of the Year, Lura Pierce has made education and peace her life's work.  As a retired middle school teacher, University of Oregon instructor for English Methods, laughter workshop leader, the Register-Guards' nominee for "one of the five funniest people in Eugene," and an ambassador for world peace. Lura carried a butterfly peace quit and children's visions of peace around the world to gather 1,000,000 visions of peace postcards in one year.  In addition, after spending years studying the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, Lura spent a year as in the one-woman show entitled, Eleanor Roosevelt, where she shared the passion and work of Mrs. Roosevelt.

Lura's blog includes the following advice from the imaginary Mrs. R. "Get involved. Get busy. You must do the things you think you cannot do...for it isn't enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it. One must work at it." This quote seems to sum up how Lura Pierce embodies life, believing in and working towards peace.

Wiles

Journey from War Zone to Curriculum for Teaching Peace

Clair Wiles, a Lambda Chapter Member, was selected as the Nobel Peace Laureate Project’s 2012 Peace Teacher of the Year. She has educated students, Delta Kappa Gamma members, and the community on the importance of peace to our world, peace through education. In 1999 she began teaching at North Eugene High School, where she still teaches today. She and a colleague developed a curriculum called Peace, Justice and Human Rights: A study of nonviolent movements and their effectiveness. This curriculum has received much attention and requests from teachers all over the world. For one year during the height of the Iraq war she was called to serve as a naval reservist, where she led intelligence briefings for 3 and 4 star generals. Returning home from duty she was determined to once again teach peace, justice and human rights along with intensive decision-making consequences to all students.
As our keynote/inspirational speaker on Saturday morning of convention, Clair will share her journey from war zone in Iraq to developing a curriculum for Teaching Peace.
