LAMBDA STATE CHAPTER LITERACY PROJECTS
In the fall of 2006 Lambda State Literacy Committee invited all Lambda State Delta Kappa Gamma chapters to report on local literacy projects in which they were involved. The objective was that this sharing of existing projects might create a spark for new ideas and be the instigation for new projects. We thank those chapters which responded to our request and congratulate all of you who are doing such wonderful and exciting things to promote literacy. May you remain untiring in your efforts and find continued success.
Chapters responding are as follows:
Beta -- *Collect books for children 0 to 12 years and donate to Child Care Resources and Referral Network and to STAR Adult Literacy Program
Chi -- * Read to Your Bunny, by Rosemary Wells, and pamphlet regarding baby’s first year given to new mothers at Jerseyville Community Hospital
Iota -- *Donate children’s books to various shelters and to the Infant Welfare Society dental clinic in Oak Park *Read to shut-ins; tape short stories; volunteer at schools and at places that serve the illiterate
Nu -- *Encourage members to read designated book and participate with Peoria Reads activities Donate books to Penny Severns Literacy Program Support Common Place and its tutoring program in a multitude of ways Award Literacy Certificate of Recognition to a Common Place tutor Present Cinderella Around the World at 2005 Lambda State Convention and Around the World with Tales Two Ways at 2006 Delta Kappa Gamma International Convention Donate books to Project Upwards’ program of providing paperback books to prisons or to the county Bellwood Nursing Home
Omicron-*Encourage members to: Donate used magazines to Dwight Prison for Women Volunteer to read to students at local schools Purchase classroom magazine subscriptions and books for classrooms and school library
Phi -- * Donate books to area schools and libraries Hold silent auction to raise monies for books to be donated Award “Certificates of Recognition” to outstanding literacy volunteers Encourage members to read designated book selection for state convention Encourage members to volunteer at schools, libraries, and literacy programs
Upsilon - *Encourage members to read designated book selection for state convention Plan to create booklet of members’ poetry and short stories Use Lambda Date website for teaching ideas Consider donating personal dictionaries to third grade students Consider donating books to area groups
Zeta -- *Work with MELD, on organization of young mothers, teaching life skills and child development, promoting parent/child interaction activities, and working to obtain and organize a library Alpha Beta -- *Continue “Aunt Mary’s Storybook Project” at Women’s Correction Facility at Dwight, donating books of multi-cultural and ethnic diversity interests for inmates to read Donate blank tapes for the women at this facility to record their reading of a book for their children to keep.
Alpha Delta -- *Donate children’s literature to the House of Good Shepherd
Alpha Epsilon-*Collect books for the Penny Severns Literacy Program Collect textbooks and encyclopedias for the Waubonsee Community College Adult Literacy Project Collect 2007-2008 calendars for the Maywood VA Hospital Continue to award literacy Certificates of Recognition to deserving individuals, including volunteers who complete Adult Literacy tutor training Promote the Annual Midwest Literary Festival in Aurora Partner with AAUW in “Read and Return library project to raise money for scholarships Use websites and activities published by the Illinois State Library Share information that supports literacy in the community, ie. Kohl’s Cares for Kids program, Macy’s “Back to Books” program, projects sponsored by local public libraries and bookstores, etc.
Alpha Nu -- *Donate books to the “Give-a-Book” Project for Kids’ Korner, the children’s waiting room in the Lake County Courthouse
Alpha Phi -- *Distribute at Passavant Hospital a “read aloud” book and a child development calendar to mothers of newborns Distribute infant and toddler books through the Morgan County Health Departments for “needy” families Operate a booth at the “Diaper Bags to Backpacks” Fair promoting literacy and awarding books as prizes Fund projects through Pampered Chef Party and grants
Alpha Rho -- *Plan to participate in Baby Talk at two
Galesburg hospitals and possibly
Alpha Upsilon-*Collect books and money to purchase books for Rx for Reading, donating books to hospitals in Robinson, Lawrenceville and Olney Continue to award Certificates of Recognition to outstanding literacy providers Donate books to the Penny Severns Literacy Project Promote the Lambda State convention book selection of the year
Alpha Xi -- *Continue the “Read to Me” program, distributing books and bibs to area children, age 0 to 3, through the Early childhood Program Continue “Reader to Reader”, sharing stories, poems, or book selections at meetings, encouraging professional growth through reading Enhance literacy through participation in the Lambda State Student Literary Arts Recognition Program Develop a professional bibliography for chapter members to encourage growth
Alpha Zeta -- *Sell used books at chapter meetings to subsidize treasury. Continue book discussion sessions in members’ homes Provide “book baskets” at local hotels/motels for travelers Host “Book Give-Away” booth
at Decatur Celebration for infants Schedule a local author for program at May meeting Beta Epsilon -- *Collect books for Christian Friendliness Present awards of recognition for outstanding contributions to literacy Conduct book sale at meetings, proceeds to fund literacy awards Share a book club entitled Book Babes with Mu chapter Conduct “Race to Read” a two-year project designed to promote the new library in Moline. Chapter has supported 20 library field trips for district first grade students with plans for 6 more this spring. Each student receives a book bag and treats. Funding provided by Ed Foundation grant and member donations Partners with Metro Link “Bus to Book: program for transportation
Beta Iota -- *Purchase books for Community Cancer Center Conduct book discussion as program for October 2007 meeting Purchase set of animal books for Miller Park Zoo to be used for educational programs and projects held at the zoo
Beta Kappa -- *Award $500 literacy grant to be shared by two members working to enhance the lives and learning of senior citizens in the local Outreach Program Offer chapter literacy grant Donate at least 25 books to a local school or agency Institute involvement in local Headstart Program
Beta Rho -- *Continue partnership with Jewel-Osco Shop and Share Days to provide funds for literacy projects that benefit local schools Select a Literacy Volunteer of the Year
Beta Theta -- *Collect books from members and donate to local women’s abuse center, Visiting Nurses Association, and homeless shelters
Delta Gamma -- *Collect books for Penny Severns Literacy Program Donate books to Quincy Cheerful Home Association, a daycare and after-school program for underprivileged children Participate in classrooms as readers, mentors, and/or tutors Award at least one Literacy Certificate of Recognition
Gamma Phi -- *Purchase professional books for the library at Freedom House, a center for abused women and children Plan to participate in the Lambda State Literary Arts Program Award a Literacy Certificate of Recognition at least once during each biennium Read to residents at local nursing home Encourage participation in Lambda State convention book discussion
Gamma Rho -- *Donate books for needy children to the Kendall County Food Pantry Give Literacy Awards to deserving members of the community Donate age-appropriate books to each elementary school represented in chapter membership
Gamma Theta -- *Participate in December Gift Wrapping Event at Barnes and Noble, proceeds earned to be used to purchase books for literary project Distribute books donated by members to two schools in Joliet area Present workshop on reading strategies at Lambda State convention (presenters Jan Grossi and Dorothy Stanfield)
