History of Beta Epsilon

Organized May 25, 1963

Beta Epsilon was organized May 25, 1963 in Blairsville, GA. Sponsored by Omega Chapter, which included Whitfield, Catoosa and Murray counties and Alpha Gamma Chapter in Banks, Habersham, Jackson, and Stephens counties, Beta Epsilon chapter included Fannin, Rabun, Towns, Union, and White counties. The first membership had 21 members from four of the counties, Fannin, Rabun, Union, and White counties. Members from Towns were initiated later.

The first initiation and organizational meeting was attended by the presidents of the two sponsoring chapters, the Psi State president, and the state executive secretary. The first officers were chosen for a three year period because organization was at mid-point of a biennium. Of course in those days everyone was required to wear hats and white gloves.

Beta Epsilon has followed a pattern over the years of four meetings a year. The early meetings were at night and all were rotated among the counties. Later, luncheon meetings were held in Blairsville on Saturday at the Milton Inn with counties rotating hostess responsibilities.

Outstanding educators continued to be added to the membership until the membership climbed to 83 in 1999. Increasing difficulty to find meeting accommodations lead the chapter to decide to form a sister chapter. Gamma Phi was organized in 2000 and include the counties of Rabun and White. Beta Epsilon included Fannin, Towns and Union counties.

Beta Epsilon has been involved in many aspects of educational, community, and society work. The Psi State History carries the records of the outstanding accomplishments, personally and professionally, of these outstanding women educators.
