The Beta Lambda Chapter of the Delta Kappa
Gamma Society International was organized on March 10, 1960, by Ottie Huff of
Birmingham and Virginia Cowden of Jasper, Alabama. Beta Lambda is an
"offspring" of the Gamma Chapter. Discussions of organizing a new
chapter had been going on for more than a year. These discussions culminated
at one meeting when Miss Florence Pass took out a piece of paper, placed it
on top of a piano and said for anyone interested in forming a new chapter to
sign the sheet. The names on the paper were some of the most active members
of the Gamma Chapter. In fact, each one had held office in that Chapter. The
names included: Mattie Baughman, Kathryn Boehmer, Leona Brown, Olivia Dannelly
(Beta State Founder), Emma Evins, Lillian Gatchell, Ann Moon Gray, Louise
Henderson, Vera Holmes, Ottie Huff, Dottie Pearl Owen, Ada Rae Pass, Florence
Pass, Clara Bell Senn, Kathryn L. Smith and Elizabeth Willingham.
The first meeting was held on March 10, 1960, at Britling's Cafeteria on
First Avenue North. Chapter meetings were held in April and May but no record
of those meetings is available. The first president of Beta Lambda was
Lillian Gatchell. Miss Gatchell was not able to complete her term as
president of Beta Lambda because she became Beta State President and served
in that capacity from 1961-1963.
