BETA BULLETIN - CHAPTER CONCERNS - STATE LEGISLATION

Greetings Beta Sisters:

I hope you have all been having a wonderful summer The weather has been a bit strange, but it could be worse. I wanted to let you know what has been going on with Beta Chapter since we last met.

We have continued to fill Birthday Bags for the Shalom Center. Thank you for the cake mixes, cans of frosting, pans, candles, etc. Children should all be able to have a birthday party. Don't forget that we also are providing swimming suits and towels so the Center can take the children to the pool or the lake on hot days. Rummage sales ar a great source for swimsuits. Girls' suits need to be one piece. Target and Kohls often have great sales on towels.

Help the INNS program by bringing toiletries (travel size work great) to our next meeting.

We are also involved with the Literacy Council and provide books for those adults who have completed the classes needed to apply for citizenship. These books are greatly appreciated.

The executive board met and has set dates and programs for the coming year. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, September 15th at the Northside Library at 5:30 p.m. We will enjoy a meal, honor the literary competition winners, and discuss the budget and dues. I hope to see all of you there. If anyone has something that they feel needs to be added to the agenda, please let me know ASAP.

Annmarie Wacker and Roberta Akalin are attending the Delta Kappa Gamma Convention in Portland, Oregon at the end of July. They will share information at the September meeting.

Lindy Nieves just received her Masters Degree with a ceremony at Navy Pier in Chicago. Congratulations!

Let me know if anyone else has news they would like to share. Educators are always the last to blow their own horns.

Enjoy the rest of your summer. I hope to see all of you at the Northside Library on Tuesday, September 15th.

+++ Information for Sigma State Delta Kappa Gamma members Compiled by Roberta Akalin, U.S. Forum/Legislative Chair, December 1, 2008

Delta Kappa Gamma Sigma State should make history in the 2008-2010 biennium by helping educate our members on issues that affect education, women, and children.

Background: Beta Chapter has expressed concern about Gardicil which is a HPV vaccine that targets four of the hundred strains of human papillomavirus (HPV)--HPV-6, HPV-11, HPV-16, and HPV-18. HPV-16 and HPV-18 account for about 70% of all cervical cancers. HPV-6 and HPV-11 account for about 90% of genital warts. The vaccine is also approved to help prevent vaginal and vulvar cancers, which can also be caused by HPV. Merck Pharmaceutical has marketed Gardicil for women ages 15 to 45 and now has focused on pre-teens. Only a few hundred girls were in their original studies. The Center for Disease Control has approved use of Gardicil for girls as young as 9. Twenty states are working on legislation to mandate vaccination with Gardicil for girls entering sixth grade. Immigration may require this vaccination prior to citizenship. The cost of the vaccine is approximately $120 for each of the three required injections.

Please read the following sample of published information. Then decide what you believe and what you want to do about Merck’s Gardicil.

What would you do for yourself and your pre-teen and teenager daughter?

What would you say to Merck, your state/national legislators, your school district, and the CDC—Center for Disease Control in Atlanta?
