Alpha Chapter May 2012 Meeting
From: Gay Craig and Fran Brock: Communications Committee
Our Alpha Chapter May 2012 meeting began with a delicious Italian meal catered by Caroline Edmunds and her helpers: Pat Atwood, Jan Hughes, Bev Slocum and Anna Johnston. We were treated to Italian wedding soup, focaccia, Caesar salad, Italian olives, two types of stuffed shells, cannoli, strawberry cheesecake and pizzelles. The meal was preceded by a grace and ended with applause for the cooks.
Jan Hughes opened the business meeting with an announcement concerning the 75th anniversary of the Sarah Holbrook Center in Burlington. Sarah Holbrook was a founding member of Alpha Chapter and the group voted to send a $75.00 donation to the center. Gay Craig will follow up concerning possible publicity at their anniversary event.
Carol Story announced our Alpha Chapter Scholarship award to Jessica Cross of Johnson State College. She will be starting her teaching internship in the fall. This was followed by a summary of the Spring Executive Board meeting and Convention by Jan Hughes and Pat Atwood. Many kudos were expressed for the beautiful program, pins, meals, accommodations and meeting. All had a wonderful time. There will be more information available when the revised Bylaws and Standing Rules are issued.
Marion Thorpe collected Smiley Boxes and gave a very precise accounting of Alpha's donations to the World Fellowship Fund to date. (See picture) Marion asked if anyone would like to take on this task while she was able to provide training.
The group approved of Gay Craig and Fran Brock working as a team with communications and the yearbook.
Alpha had voted on this slate of new and continuing officers in April: Jan Hughes - president, Allison Letourneau - Vice president, Suzanne Diner - secretary, and Trisha Casey-Rafter - corresponding secretary. Jan and Suzanne were installed at this May meeting; unfortunately the other officers could not attend. They will be installed at the September meeting. (See picture)
Fran Brock was awarded Alpha Chapter's Woman of Distinction Award 2012. She received a framed summary of her many exemplary attributes and accomplishments in the field of teaching and as a member of Alpha Chapter, Alpha Lambda State and DKG International. (See picture).
Fran Whitney read a remembrance and placed a white rose in honor of her dear friend and Alpha sister Priscilla Hayes. Priscilla taught reading at Flynn and the Champlain schools in Burlington and was well known as the author of the current Vermont State Drivers manual. It is she who made it accessible to all through her revisions. Many members shared memories of Priscilla with our group. We closed the meeting with the DKG Song.
