| The
Theta Lambda chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was
organized as the 202nd chapter of Alpha State on April 20, 1968 at the
Cohen House on Rice University's campus. The chapter was organized
by Eula Lee Carter, state chairman of the committee on organization and
expansion. Mrs. Carter was assisted by Phyllis Ellis, who was the
State Executive secretary. There were 27 charter members. The
chapter was an outgrowth of several chapters in the Houston
area.
Because our membership originally drew from several Houston-area chapters, our membership continues to attract members from different locations within the greater Houston area. Our membership remains small because we are a "quota chapter" and have up to only 35 active members. The chapter founders provided for this small size to encourage members to meet in each others' homes.

Projects |
|||||
| In 2006 Theta Lambda is going to make Valentines of appreciation and encouragement to be distributed to American Troops serving in harm's way in the Middle East. We will also be sending Beanie Babies for the troops to distribute to the children in the region, along with Valentines made by children in our classrooms. These small offerings of peace will convey a message of caring and concern. | |||||
| The Scholarship Committee holds a small drawing at each meeting. For a very nominal fee, members can take a chance on a small, donated prize. Proceeds go to the Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship Fund. | |||||
| With a similar commitment to making a positive contribution to peace in the Middle East, Theta Lambda is donating funds to support UNICEF project which is working to improve teacher training and educational opportunities in Afghanistan. | |||||
