PROJECTS

Women's Storybook Project of Texas

Women's Storybook Project is a volunteer program that started in Austin, Texas in 2003 and targets the children of women who are imprisoned at Gatesville prisons. Statistics show that one out of every five children of incarcerated parents also end up in prison. This project strives to change this statistic by developing strong relationships between mothers and their children.

Beta Tau will provide materials and support to the Women's Storybook Project of Texas, a program to benefit children of incarcerated women through having eligible women in prison read stories to be taped and sent to their children. We will purchase books, audiotapes, and offer further financial support to assist with expenses of postage and travel for the individuals providing this valuable service to encourage the parent-child connection and literacy.
This is an on-going project for our chapter.

Mentoring Project

Beta Tau will continue to develop a mentoring program for local schools where chapter members are employed. Retired Beta Tau members will serve as mentors to teachers new to the profession. Donation of a basket of school supplies and a reception will be included in the plan. This project is in its second year of development.

Dress for Success

This is the first year of Beta Tau support of Dress for Success, "a nonprofit organization that provides interview suits, confidence boosts, and career development to low income women in over seventy-five cities worldwide." After learning about Dress for Success at the October style show, Beta Tau members will be encouraged to donate a variety of clothes, shoes, jewelry, and purses. Donations can be made at any Five Star Cleaners in San Antonio. Five Star Cleaners will clean the clothing and deliver it to Dress for Success. Additional donations may be brought to Beta Tau meetings and will be taken to the Dress for Success center in the Wonderland of America Mall (formerly Crossroads).
