Project Descriptions:

Beta Beta Chapter has several special projects that members actively endorse and participate in each year.

Read to Me: To promote literacy, Beta Beta chapter has been a partner in the Read to Me program at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge for several years. Betty Jackson represents Beta Beta Chapter as she vounteers at the hospital on the maternity floor. She presents a book and literature to new mothers from Roane and Morgan Counties. With the literature, she also encourages new mothers to read to their children and to be actively involved with them as they grow up.

Imagination Library: Another literacy project that Beta Beta Chapter continues to support is the Imagination Library. Beta Beta member Donna Jerden serves as director, and another member, Barbara Summers, is the treasurer of the Imagination Library of Morgan County. Members rescue undeliverable books, register children, distribute books, and encourage dontations for the program. Beta Beta Chapter started the Stamp Out the Postage Increase several years ago when proposed postal increases threatened to hamper the project.

Teacher Mini-Grants: Several years ago, Beta Beta Chapter began a program to promote creativity in the classroom by offering two $100 mini-grants to teachers in the Morgan County School System. Beta Beta members and non-members are eligible to apply. There is an application process and recipients provide follow-up after the completion of the project.

Future Educator Award: In an effort to encourage graduating female seniors who plan on entering the field of education, Beta Beta Chapter provides an award that may be presented at each of the four high schools in the county. This award consists of a computer flash drive and a mentoring program for the femal students. Beta Beta members at each of the schools will select the recipient by February, and the future educators will be invited to the April meeting.
