Readers of Tomorrow - One Book at a Time

The Alpha Pi literacy project "Books for Babies" began January 2000. With contributions from the members and financial support of community service clubs from Tullahoma and Manchester, a book was donated to the parents of each baby born at Harton Hospital in Tullahoma during 2000. Included with this book was the Xi State brochure "Travel into the World through Books". This project continued until 2006.

The Coffee County program "Readers of Tomorrow - One Book at a Time" began in January 2006 as a component of Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen's Books from Birth Foundation and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. At that time, Alpha Pi members chose to redirect the funds dedicated to "Books for Babies" to the Coffee County program.

At Xi State Convention in June 2006, members approved the Governor's Books from Birth program as the Xi State literacy project. Alpha Pi supports the Xi State project through continued support and contributions to the Coffee County program.

As an extension of participating in Books from Birth, Alpha Pi members annually display a booth at both Coffee County Walmart stores in the fall. At this time, efforts are made to recruit new families with small children into the program. Leaflets from the state with Dolly Parton prominently shown are distributed and several sample books from the program are displayed for the families to see. The leaflet contains a registration form so that parents can enroll any children under the age of five so that they can begin receiving the free books monthly in the mail.

Coffee County Literacy Auction - "A Chair-i-table Event"

Each year the Adult Education program of Coffee County sponsors a fund-raising dinner and silent auction with decorated chairs available for purchase by auction. Each year, Alpha Pi donates at least one chair uniquely decorated by an Alpha Pi member to assist in this fund-raising project. If no chair is available for donation, a monetary donation is made by the chapter.
