PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

We had a very busy and enjoyable meeting on Sept. 8, at East Lincoln Elementary. Tullahoma firemen presented a program on home fire safety. A silent auction was held to help us toward our goal of becoming a visionary chapter. We elected two new members and approved reinstatement of a former member. Let’s all mark our calendars for our meetings this year and make plans to be involved with chapter activities.

COMMITTEE CORNER

Rules Committee . Proposed changes in the Committee section of the Alpha Pi Chapter Rules wereapproved at the September meeting. Copies of the new Alpha Pi chapter rules will be distributed for inclusion in the 2008-09 Yearbook.

Website Committee . The newsletter will be available from the Alpha Pi website this year. Members will receive an email letting them know when each newsletter is available for viewing. This change is part of an international emphasis on paperless communication in Delta Kappa Gamma.

Literacy Committee . Alpha Pi Chapter participation in the state-wide sign-up of children for the Books from Birth project will be conducted October 25 at Wal-Marts in Manchester and Tullahoma. Volunteers are needed to participate in signing children up for the local Readers of Tomorrow Program.

XI STATE NOTES

----The 2nd Annual Statewide Sign-up for the Books from Birth project is planned for September 20. Neither the Tullahoma nor the Manchester WalMart locations were available on that date so the Alpha Pi sign-up day will be October 25. Individual chapters are encouraged to sign up children between the ages of birth to five years in the respective area; these children will receive one book per month through the mail at no charge until the age of five. Sign-up brochures may be procured from the area Books from Birth representative involved with the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation. Accountability forms for this project will be sent to new area directors for distribution to the respective chapters so that points may be received toward Chapter Excellence Awards. Alpha Pi is exploring the distribution of these brochures druing parent-teacher fall conferences at elementary schools in the Coffee County, Tullahoma City, and Manchester City School systems as an additional means for publicizing Books from Birth.

--- To become a Visionary Chapter in Delta Kappa Gamma, a donation of $1000 is needed. The Silent Auction at the September meeting netted $340. Other auctions or fund-raisers will be held during the year so that we can reach our goal.
