EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE

The goals of the Educational Excellence Committee are to develop programs, projects, events, and activities which:

1. Empower women through leadership opportunities

2. Engage students and educators through programs and projects

3. Create community and global involvement.

Our State’s Annie Webb Blanton Scholarship, Martha A. Schultz Doctoral Scholarship, Exemplary Service Award, and Rose of Recognition Award, all reflect the educational excellence goal of empowering women through leadership opportunities. We also support empowering women leaders when we contribute to the International Golden Gift/DKG Ignite and the DKG Educational Foundation.

Our Alpha Chi Nevada State Membership Initiative #2, which requires each chapter to award a Nevada Apple grant, is an example of educational excellence. The Nevada Apple grant engages educators through their unique and creative contributions to their schools, classrooms, and students.

When our chapters and state contribute to the World Fellowship Fund, the Emergency Fund, Schools for Africa, and International Speakers Fund, we are creating community and global involvement through educational excellence.

In addition to the Nevada Apple grants each chapter awards, there are many other projects, programs, events, and activities our chapters have been involved in and have implemented to meet our educational excellence goals of empowering women leaders, engaging students and educators, and providing for community and global involvement. Let’s take a look!

Spring/Summer

Consider hosting a 5, 10, or 25-year “Anniversary Reunion” brunch to invite former chapter members who are no longer active. This would be a good time to share what you have been doing in their absence.  Showcase your projects and programs through scrapbooks and/or presentations. This is a great chance to renew friendships and perhaps encourage reinstatement for some.

Put together Teacher Appreciation baskets to be delivered to a few schools in your district, perhaps chosen by chapter members who are still teaching or have connections to teachers in certain schools. Chapter members could each donate items to include in the baskets. Consider placing a flyer or brochure about DKG in the basket with your chapter contact information for further questions or interest in membership.

Purchase lilies or mums to be delivered to Senior Citizen Centers, Nursing Homes, and/or Veterans’ Hospitals for special occasions such as Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day, 4th of July, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, … .

EEC Project & Program Ideas for November

*Assign a mentor to each new member, or create a mentor job/committee chair position. The mentor contacts the new member periodically just to check-in; to invite her to a DKG function; to offer a ride to a chapter meeting; to pair up on a DKG project; to sit together at a chapter meeting or program; to assist with technology; etc.
* Create a chapter calendar for members. A membership calendar keeps all members in the loop with new developments and what to look forward to each month.

*Contact local schools and offer supplies and or snacks for their after-school programs.

*Contact local women’s shelters and donate pajamas and much needed toiletries.

EEC Programs/Projects-of-the-Month

Try these project ideas and fundraising idea in October!

*Consider giving books to your local hospitals to send home with mothers and new babies.

*Give student teacher baskets to new student teachers in your area schools.

*For a fundraising idea:  Check into Walmart’s Matching Funds Program; the See’s Candy and Yankee Candles Sales Programs with profit to organizations; and Panera Bread gift cards with DKG getting a percentage.

Try these two DKG program/project ideas in September!

*Hold your meeting in a school computer lab in order to teach every member how to surf the Society website (dkg.org).

*Use a “bragging basket” to collect one dollar from each member who would like to take advantage of a bragging time during the meeting to share personal news or brag about the accomplishments of themselves or someone else.  The money is donated at the end of the year to chapter scholarships or to a DKG Fund (DKGIEF).
