OUR PROJECT: Manna House

Manna House provides transitional housing for battered, homeless women who receive welfare and have at least one child. Nine mothers and 16 children currently live at the house they share a kitchen, dining room and living room and each family has at least one room of their own Manna House opened in 1987 and Mu Chapter has been actively involved with this project since that time. We provide monetary donations, clothing, books, and support on an as needed basis. Some of our member's school districts have also become involved with the project. In addition, Manna House receives funding from county grants and individual donations.

Manna House requires women to take part in school, volunteer activities, and its life skills program for 35 hours per week for 13 to 15 weeks. Full-time instruction is required for women under 20 without a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma. After that period, they are referred to the Monmouth County Division of Employment and Training, which helps train them for paid employment.

Jobs women have received after volunteering include office managers, medical law office assistants, certified nurses' aids, teachers or day care assistants and jobs in food service, medical billing, and telemarketing, she said.

Support from Manna House continues for the women after they leave the center. Women are allowed to use the computer there and are helped by the staff in finding things like proper clothing for job interviews, she said
