Beta Chapter Celebrates 69 Years

On January 26, Beta Chapter members gathered at the Silver Moon to celebrate the chapter’s birthday. B is for Beta, B is for...elicited a variety of responses including memories of two Beta members.
From Ann Braaten: The members of our chapter have all signed their names in the brown Beta Chapter book since 1941 when our chapter was first established.   Looking though it is a fun walk through history.  I recognize the names of women who taught at NDSU and others, like Adeline Stevenson Nurse and Jane Kegel, who are remembered with scholarships given in their honor.  I was so excited when I got to 1954 and recognized a former member who was still living.  It was Bernice Ihlenfeld.  She was the Assistant Principal at Fargo North High, where I was a student in the mid-1970s. I remember her being “a force to be reckoned with.”  In the 1980s, I saw Mrs. Ihlenfeld swimming each morning at the YMCA.  She told me that swimming helped alleviate her arthritis.  Deb Boyer said that even now, in 2010, she still swims each morning.  Mrs. Ihlenfeld is a model for wellness for all of us to follow as we move through life.
From Patti Nelson: Delma Bratvold was my third grade teacher at Roosevelt Elementary.  My father was in Vietnam, at the time, and my mom and two sisters were staying in Fargo with Grandma and Grandpa.  She was an awesome teacher who remembered me when I moved back to Fargo, as an adult, and joined Delta Kappa Gamma.  I remember her telling me, “How could I forget!  Your father was at war and when he returned, your family moved to Hawaii.” She brought tears to my eyes for remembering me and welcoming me into Delta Kappa Gamma.  Although she is no longer with us, I will remember her -  ALWAYS!

Flat Annie Visits Beta Chapter

Flat Annie enjoyed visiting Beta Chapter of Alpha Omicron State in Fargo, North Dakota.  (The president’s name is Ann!)
Her first order of business was to attend the Alpha Omicron State Convention.  One of the highlights she   enjoyed was the entertaining banquet at the convention in June.  A Victorian Murder Mystery, led by Deb Sauer, and involving members from Sigma Chapter was enjoyed by all present.  The audience was asked to vote by applause who was the guilty party.  They thought it was the secretary however in truth the jilted bride was the culprit.  All members wore hats and drank tea from china tea cups.  Annie wore her favorite hat and shawl and even brought her own tea cup.
Upon returning to Fargo Flat Annie was intrigued to learn what the Red River Zoo, the YWCA Shelter, and the Yunker’s Farm Children’s Museum had in common; the answer was Beta Chapter.  A Golden Grant was awarded to the Delta Kappa Gamma sisters to promote literacy with children who were staying at the shelter.  Various opportunities for the children were afforded as a result of the funding.  Beta  Chapter  purchased  a year long pass for the children to visit the Yunker’s Farm Children’s Museum.    The fun continued as 70 passes to the zoo were purchased for the children.  In addition members of the chapter as well as student’s from Minnesota State University Moorhead scheduled holiday events to promote reading.  Thanksgiving, Christmas and of course Dr. Seuss’s birthday provided festivities including books, games, treats, and celebrating.
Flat Annie was thrilled to see one of the many painted  buffaloes in Fargo.
The Beta members also
 gifted her with a t-shirt
that marked the Spring
flood in Fargo and
surrounding areas.
