Beta Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International
Meeting Minutes October 4, 2008

Program:  North Dakota Human Rights Coalition & Candidacy for North Dakota Public Service Commissioner by Cheryl Bergian
Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met Saturday, October 4, 2008, at North Town Grill, 3250 12th Avenue North, Fargo, ND.  The meeting was called to order by Ann Braaten, president with twenty-five (25) members present and one (1) guest present.
Secretary’s Report:  Minutes of the September 4, 2008, were approved as published in the Beta Bits.
Treasurer’s Report:  Collette Folstad reported a balance of $558.22 with total assets of $30,897.48.  The bank report has $21 more than our records.  (How unusual considering the times).  Collette will review the records for the discrepancy.
Correspondence:  There was no correspondence.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Membership and Courtesy:  Jolynn Krabbenhoft reported that we would be initiating Nancy Lilleberg at this meeting.  Another woman will be initiated in May due to schedule constraints.
Scholarship:  President Ann Braaten reminded us that this year we will award the Adeline Stevenson Nurse Scholarship at the June 2009 State Convention in Mandan.  She reminded us the applications are also due February 1  for the Hazel B. Nielsen Scholarship.
Music:  President Ann Braaten encouraged us to have music for our meetings.  She acknowledged that the environment adds an extra challenge that will draw on our creativity to provide song for the members.
Literacy:  “Spark a Reader”:  Yvonne TImian informed the membership of the project at the YWCA that she, Linda Coons, Maureen Scott, and Debra Boyer have planned for October.  With money from the Golden Grant Beta has purchased a year long membership at Yunker’s Farm for all the children at the shelter. This summer they were able to tour the gardens and participated in Kid-cology Camp. In addition the committee will provide 3 additional literacy activity days at the shelter.  Harvest will be the theme of the first gathering. The day will consist of reading stories, related art and game activities, followed by treats.  Ginger Deitz stated that the shelter is full beyond capacity.

NEW BUSINESS: President Ann Braaten told us that it was time to update the Chapter Standing Rules.  We are also mandated to have a Rules Committee; Beta currently has no such committee.  Connie Knain informed us that we are not required to have the same committees at the local level that are part of the State organization.  We may consolidate committees.  Connie Knain volunteered to serve on the new Rules Committee along with Jeanette Dittman and Muriel Vincent.
There was discussion regarding the transfer of responsibilities and information from outgoing committee chairs to the new chairs.  Current files are given to new chairs in a formal manner every two years.
Ginger Deitz will take our donated supplies to the YWCA Shelter.  She reported that there are 85 people in a facility built for 65.  They appreciate the community support.
Connie Knain encouraged us to go to the International website to see the presentation that explains the $20 dues increase.  International has done much to trim away excesses in expenditures.  Some of the membership were unaware the dues have risen from $50 to $70.
