The name of our Chapter is Mu and the Greek Letter is M.

Mu Chapter was organized on April 26, 1952, by Leora Prentiss of Gamma Chapter. Organization was at a luncheon meeting at the old Elm Hotel in Auburn. Fourteen teachers were at this meeting. Miss Nora Jackson of Augusta presided at the initiation and installation ceremonies.

Narrative History 1998 - 2000

The 1998-2000 Biennium started with a meeting of Mu Chapter on September 8, 1998, at Lewiston High School. Hostesses for the evening were Yvonne Gross (chairperson), Eileen Bowie, Debbie Butler, Barbara Jabaut, Crystal Ward, Mona Ervin, Jean Roy, and Pat Spilecki. A business meeting was held as well as the revealing of Secret Pals.

Hostesses for the October meeting , which was held at Sherwood Heights School in Auburn on October 13, included Glenys Ryder (chairperson), Becky Skilling, Audrey Gould, Judy Holbrook, Mildred Bickford, Lyn Heath, Edie Jordan, Barbara Randall, and Verna Mullen. Plans were discussed for the Teddy Bear Fair; and after the business meeting, members worked on crafts for the fair.

On October 16 and 17, 1998, the Alphi Psi Fall Workshop was held at Kennebec Valley Technical College in Fairfield. Our own Madelyn Given presented a program on "Kilimanjaro and Beyond." Thirteen members of Mu Chapter atended Workshop.

The Teddy Bear Fair under the direction of Pat Spilecki and Jean Roy was held on Saturday, October 24, at Lewiston High School gym. It was very successful, which is very important as it is Mu Chapter's major fundraiser!

Priscilla Hayes, membership chairperson, hosted five of six prospective initiates at her home on October 28.

On November 10 at the Lewiston Regional Technical Center three new members were initiated. The hostess committee consisted of Carol Day (chairperson), Marilyn Curtis, Libby Hopping, Elizabeth Edgecomb, Joni Cooke, Phyllis Gamache, Betty Leibowitz, Marcia Jolicoeur, and Marilyn McEntee. We selected new Secret Pals.

Our Holiday Banquet was held on December 8 at Martindale Country Club. A delicious meal was served in a festive holiday setting! Hostesses for the evening were Christine Cook (chairperson), Sue Grondin, Kathy Cutler, Diane Bleakney, Kay Sykes, Loretta Hamann, Kathleen Ryder, Maureen Downs, Adele Silverman, Sue Conelius, and Joanna Wallingford. Our annual AWAP project, Christmas gifts for abused women and their children, was a hugh success due to the generosity of our members. We sang Christmas carols and held a gift exchange.

The January 1999 meeting of Mu Chapter was cancelled due to bad weather, so we met on February 9 at Fairview School in Auburn. The hostess committee included Sue Tymoczko (chairperson), Pat McClusky, Penny Appleby, Mary Ellen Harvey, Karen Theriault, Andriann Tucker, Barbara Rivera, Bonnie Galway, and Barbara Randall. Janice Rawson was initiated as a new member. Barbara Rivera, Jean Roy, and Crystal Ward presented information about teaching in a safe environment.

On March 9 Mu Chapter met again at Lewiston Reginal Vocational Technical Center. Hostesses for the evening were Nancy Mahar (chairperson), Marjorie Clifford, Deborah Spooner, Ronda Lecompte, Rosaria Chantrill, Debbie Dodge, Debbie Hillman, and Gerry Ricker. Diane Malinski, introduced by Yvonne Gross, presented a most interesting progrm on "Life in Japan." Glenys Ryder, Mu Historian, passed out updated inserts of our history to each member.

The April meeting of the chapter was held on April 13 at Oak Hill High School in Wales. The hostess committee comprised of Therese Nadeau (chairperson), Elaine Moreau, Barbara Edwards, Gina Fuller, Jeanne Edmunds, Barbara Rimmer and the new initiates served a birthday cake in honor of Mu's birthday celebration. Members were encouraged to bring books each month for the "Read to Me" program. The evening program, arranged by Gina Fuller, was "Internet as a Tool" by Matt Conde and friends. Each member got individualized instruction on the computer.

Our Spring Banquet was held on May 11 at the United Methodist Church in Auburn. Special guests were Alpha Psi State Past and Present Presidents. Past Mu Presidents were also recognized. After a delicious meal members and guests were entertained by a "Year End Revue Slide Show." Hostesses for the evening were Madelyn Given (chairperson), Audrey Grant, Mary Bussell, Priscilla Hayes, Jan Sweetser, Cookie Hazard, Diane Tardy, and Evelyn Ehrefried.

Alpha Psi Convention was held on May 14-16, 1999, at the Senator in Augusta. Mu Chapter had the most people in attendance with twenty-one members. Loretta Hamann was awarded an Alpha Psi State Scholarship.

Our last meeting until the fall was held on June 1 at Park Avenue Methodist Church in Auburn, when we entertained the retired teachers in the area with desssert. Arrangements were made by Shelly Chapman and Cheryl Logan (co-chairpersons), Pam MacDonald, Sue Deroche, Marjorie Merrill, Sonia Rivera, Marie Laverdiere, and Gladys Chapman. After dessert and musical entertainment, Mu President, Phylllis Gamache, transferred her gavel to Mona Ervin, who graciously agreed to serve as president for the coming year since Phyllis had already served for three years. Meeting was adjourned for the summer.

We began the second year of the biennium on September 14, 1999 at Auburn Middle School. In the absence of our president, Mona Ervin, Vice President Marcia Jolicoeur presided at the meeting. Hostesses for the evening were Ronda Lecompte (chairperson), Nancy Mahar, Marjorie Clifford, Deborah Spooner, Rosaire Chantrill, Debbie Dodge, Debbie Hillman, and Gerry Ricker, The budget, fair update, NEA update, and discussion of the proposed Standing Rules were agenda items.

Mu Chapter sisters were sorry to get word that Maureen Down's husband had been in a serious accident in Texas. During Maureen's stay in Texas, Madelyn Linscott graciously took over her previous job as Treasurer.

The Fall Workshop of Alpha Psi State was held earlier this year on September 24 at Eastern Maine Technical College in Bangor. It was attended by several members of Mu Chapter who reported that the individual workshops were both informative and entertaining.

The October 12 meeting took place at Sherwood Heights School in Auburn. Hostesses for the evening were Becky Skilling(chairperson), Glenys Ryder, Audrey Gould, July Holbrook, Mildred Bickford, Lyn Heath, Edie Jordan, and Verna Mullen. Last minute details for the Teddy Bear Fair were worked out. Secret Pals were revealed. New initiates were voted on.

The Teddy Bear Fair was held on Saturday, October 23, at Lewiston High School gym. As usual, under the experienced leadership of Pat Spilecki and Jean Roy, it was most successful.

The Orientation Tea was held on October 26, at the home of 2nd Vice President, Priscilla Hayes. There were five prospective members in attendance.

On November 9, we gathered at Lisbon Falls Methodist Church. Suzanne Bouchard and Sheryl Walters were initiated into our Society. Members were inspired and uplifted by Madelyn Given's presentation on her Antarctica marathon experience. Hostesses for the evening were Carol Day (chairperson), Marilyn Curtis, Elizabeth Edgecomb, Joni Cooke, Phyllis Gamache, Betty Leibowitz, Marcia Jolicoeur, Libby Hopping, Erica Melanson, and Marilyn McEntee.

The Holiday Banquet was held on December 24 at Martindale Country Club in Auburn. Arrangements for this meeting were under the direction of Karen Theriault (chairperson), Sue Tymoczko, Pat McCluskey, Penny Appleby, Mary Ellen Harvey, Adriann Tucker, Barbara Rivera , Bonnie Galway, Barbara Randall, and Jenny Sellinger. Eighty-nine AWAP (Abused Women Advocacy Program) clients were given gifts at Christman by our membership. These were brought to the meeting and collected by Sue Cornelius and the Personal Growth and Services Committee. Members enjoyed holiday music after a wonderful banquet, as well as a gift exchange.

We were able to get our January/February meeting in on January 11 at the Governor Longley School in Lewiston. Hostesses were Priscilla Hayes (chairperson), Madelyn Given, Audrey Grant, Mary Bussell, Jan Sweetser, Cookie Hazard, Diane Tardy, and Evelyn Ehrenfried. A very interesting program on "Tribes" was presented by Adele Silverman. Two new members were also initiated that evening: Susan Myers and Carolyn Dubuc.

On March 14 Mu Chapter met at the Lepage Conference Center of St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston. Refreshments were served by Maureen Downs (chairperson), Christine Cook, Sue Grondin, Kathy Cutter, Diane Bleakney, Kay Sykes, Loretta Hamann, Kim Ryder, Adele Silverman, Sue Cornelius, and Joanna Wallingford. A guest at the meeting was Jane Banks from the Lewiston/Auburn Rotary Club. The Rotary and Mu Chapter have formed a partnership for the Read To Me Program, a literacy program for providing books to parents of newborns at the local hospitals. Mona Ervin has been chairing the committee for our chapter. Guest presenters were Sue Belanger and Dana Larson, who spoke on Women's Wellness.

The April meeting was held on April 4 at the Minot Consolidated School. Hostesses were Crystal Ward (chairperson). Yvonne Gross, Eileen Bowie, Debbie Butler, Barbara Jabaut, Mona Ervin, Jean Roy, and Pat Spilecki. A Founder's Day Celebration was held as well as the recognition of Past Mu Presidents. Yvonne Gross introduced our guest speaker, Betty Fake, who did a slide show on Egypt.

Mu members attending the State Convention at Presque Isle on April 20-30 were Mona Ervin, Phyllis Gamache, Judy Holbrook, Marcia Jolicoeur, Madelyn Linscott, Barbara Randall, and Glenys Ryder. It was a great convention and members came back renewed.

The Spring Banquet was held at the United Methodist Church in Auburn on May 9. Past Presidents of Alpha Psi State and President Katie Yando were our special guests. Arrangements were made by Gina Fuller (chairperson), Therese Nadeau, Elaine Moreau, Barbara Edwards, Jeanne Edmunds, Barbara Rimmer, and Janice Rawson. Installation of officers for the 2000-2002 biennium was held. A report on State Convention was given.

The final meeting of the biennium was the Retired Teachers' Tea to honor retirees from the area which was held on June 6 at the United Methodist Church in Auburn. Hostesses for the evening were Shelly Chapman and Cheryl Logan (co-chairpersons), Pam MacDonald, Sue Deroche, Marjorie Merrill, Sonia Rivera, Marie Laverdiere, Sarah Duchette, and Gladys Chapman. After a delightful dessert, we were entertained by the Royal River Chapter of Sweet Adeleine's. What a perfect finish for a wonderful biennium!

 

Recognitions/Activities 1998-2000

1998-2000 - Glenys Ryder served as Historian of Alpha Psi State.
1999-2000-Crystal Ward served as Alpha Psi Professional Affairs and Legislation Chairperson

Crystal Ward, President of the Lewiston Education Association, was a member of the Learning Results Design Team and the Western Partnership Liaison. She was involved in the MEA Government Relations Committee, the Association Curriculum Development and the National Council of Social Studies. She was a presenter at the MEA Issues Conference.

Marilyn McEntee was the recipient of a UMM writing grant proposal. She is the in-service secretary for the Western Maine Cooperating schools.

Penny Appleby attended the Student Assistant Team Regional Conference. She received the System Dropout Prevention Award. She is a member of the Association for Supervisors and Curriculum Development. She is active in the Music Educator's organization and the Educational Theater Association.

Rosaria Chantrill is the Learning Area Leader for the Auburn School District in the Career Preparation Content area. She serves as the treasurer for the Maine Association Family and Consumer Science Educators.

Ronda Lecompte was an action research presenter for the Bates College Spencer Grant during the conference on interpreting learning results. She is a member of the Character Education Committee. Ronda is secretary for the Maine Association of Family and Consumer Science.

Marilyn Curtis was awarded an Alpha Psi State Scholarship for advanced study in a Master's Degree Program.

Barbara Randall, Past State President of Alpha Psi, presented the tribute to the International Founders at the President's Banquet at Convention '98 in Portland.

Phyllis Gamache, president of Mu Chapter, participated in the Alpha Psi State necrology service at convention.

Jean Roy completed the requirements for her Master's Degree. She was nominated for President of the Lewiston Educator's Association. She served on the MEA Leadership Development Committee.

Cherly Logan was a member of the School Union Planning Committee and Certification Committee.

Jeanne Edmunds was a member of the Discipline Policy Review Committee. She was chief negotiator and an MEA member.

Madelyn Given was the chairperson for Master Teachers in Lewiston. She also served on the Certification Committee for the school system.

Madelyn Given and Maureen Downs were both inducted into Who's Who of American Teachers.

Loretta Hamann was awarded an Alpha Psi State Scholarship at the May, 1999, Spring Convention. She received a Master's Degree in Technology through Leslie College.

Ronda LeCompte was named the Maine Association of Family and Consumer Science Teacher of the Year.

Diane Bleakney's daughter, Allison, was selected as one of Lewiston's Ten Shining Stars.

Marilyn Curtis was recognized as Teacher of the Bicentennial Year by Rep. Nancy Chizmar of Lisbon Falls.

Joni Cooke received the Miliken Educator Award by the Miliken Family Foundation. She was awarded a trip to Beverly Hills, CA, as part of this award. She also won the 1999 Presidential Award.

Sue Grondin was a member of the NEA Resolutions Committee for 1999 and was reelected to serve on this committee for another year. Sue also was the recipient of the Geneva Kirk Award for educators.
