The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International

international Tau Chapter of Alpha Epsilon State (Indiana)

Membership in Tau Chapter consists of 70  members: 64 active, 5 reserve, and one honorary. Our members come from the public schools in and around Bartholomew County, plus administrators, private schools, university faculty, and preschools.

Even though our membership is large, we encourage attendance, pride, camaraderie, and participation. The nametags worn at every meeting are useful for remembering names and tracking attendance. Members who attend 4 or 5 meetings during the year are rewarded with flowers and certificates. Every member is assigned to an actively working committee. We reward Milestone Certificates for years of membership. Each year we give an award to an exemplary teacher and an exemplary retired teacher as nominated by a member of our chapter.  We award scholarships and grants-in-aid to teachers in in this area, annual awards to a graduating high school student who is planning to enter the teaching profession, and to a college student who will be student teaching the next year. We strive for a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, which encourages members to have pride in our group.

On June 12, 2021, Sue Linder was one of the Women of Distinction recognized at the Indiana State Delta Kappa Gamma’s Indiana State Conference. Sue was recognized for her work at the Pit Stop at Asbury United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Bill, began working at the student lunch program that served Tacos to high school students in 2008. As retired BCSC teachers, they loved being around the students.

Sue Linder works as an IUPUC Student Teacher Supervisor and dedicates so much time to Tau Chapter of DKG as a former president, 1st VP, and 2nd VP and numerous committee leadership roles. She creates Tau Talk Newsletter and the Directory for the Chapter. She also serves on the DKG State Level. Sue was initiated into Delta Kappa Gamma on Aug. 15,1998.  Betty Brown Welch was Tau’s President at that time.

Sue and Bill fondly recall their roles.
We always planned on serving at least 100 to 150 high schoolers for lunch each Pit Stop day.  Many days we hit closer to 200 + high schoolers.  This past year was the first one that we didn’t have Pit Stop in almost 13 years.
Yes, we have had a great time working with Pit Stop at Asbury or as the high schoolers call us, “Taco Church”.

Tau Chapter of Alpha Epsilon State, established 1944,  is located in Columbus, Indiana, a city of 44,000. Dubbed “Athens of the Prairie,” Columbus is proud of the unique architecture that makes our city a destination for many tourists and students of architecture. A cosmopolitan city evidenced by the people from many countries who live here, Columbus celebrates its diversity yearly through an Ethnic Expo. The arts are strongly supported by the community, as shown by attendance at performances of two local symphonies and a city band and interest in the many different displays in the Columbus Gallery of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
